Security Freeze

What is a Security Freeze?

A security freeze allows the consumer to place a freeze on his or her credit report; providing that procedures and requirements are followed. It authorizes a consumer to allow specified temporary access to his or her report and score during a security freeze.

How to “Freeze” Your Credit Files?

A security freeze means that your credit information cannot be given to potential creditors. A security freeze can help prevent identity theft. Most businesses will not open a credit account without first checking a consumer’s credit history. If your credit files are frozen, even someone who has your name and Social Security number would probably not be able to get credit in your name.

A security freeze is free to identity theft victims who have a police report of identity theft. If you are not a victim of identity theft, then you will have to pay a $10 fee to each credit bureau to freeze your file.

How do I place a security freeze?

To place a freeze, you must write to each of the three credit bureaus. You must provide information to verify your identity. If you are a victim of identity theft, please remember to provide a copy of your police report supporting that claim. Otherwise provide payment of $10 to each of the credit bureaus.
